4. a highly structured system of human organization for large-scale community living that normally furnishes protection, continuity, security, and a national identity for its members: American society.
Let's assume you wish to live in a society, there are common general rules we all agree to live by.
Most "western" county's societies were founded on Cristian beliefs/moral codes of conduct.
Good question. It seems today that many don't have the answer, nor do they care to know. Not so many years ago, nobody even needed to ask what morals were....we learned them, as we learned other valuable skills, such as reading. Our parents and family taught us Our teachers and mentors taught us Our neighbours and those around us taugh us Our society and others all over the world taught us Our interaction with the world taught us
we learned our society's moral code when we were children, and were guided into adulthood to become "upstanding, law abiding citizens".
Our moral code, which we all agreed on, kept harmony between the peoples of our society. It was based on religious teachings, predominant when the society was created. Most if not all western counties are Cristian predominant based. This means that the Bible was used to form the moral code. An example is the 10 commandments.
The 10 Commandments - God's Revelation in the Old Testament The 10 Commandments are found in the Bible's Old Testament at Exodus, Chapter 20. They were given directly by God to the people of Israel at Mount Sinai after He had delivered them from slavery in Egypt:
"And God spoke all these words, saying: 'I am the LORD your God…
ONE: 'You shall have no other gods before Me.'
TWO: 'You shall not make for yourself a carved image--any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.'
THREE: 'You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.'
FOUR: 'Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.'
FIVE: 'Honor your father and your mother.'
SIX: 'You shall not murder.'
SEVEN: 'You shall not commit adultery.'
EIGHT: 'You shall not steal.'
NINE: 'You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.'
TEN: 'You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's.'
weather you are Christian or not, Western society is based on these 10 commandments.
Let's try to take out the religious tone of my last posting here. I do not intend to speak for/of any religion, nor do I ever wish to offend any other religion or person. I am only trying to state the facts, in a simple way, so all can understand.
Today, western countries embrace a less religious tone,so we do not need to discuss 1. to 4. as they can not be applied to the general concept of society.
ONE: n.a.
TWO: n.a.
THREE: don't swear (saying God! when angry)(although this was taboo in many families and schools, it is not so relevant or serious today)
FOUR: don't work on Sunday (this is why most/many stores are closed Sundays)
FIVE: do respect your father and your mother.
SIX: don't murder anybody
SEVEN: don't commit adultery
EIGHT: don't steal
NINE: don't lie about other people
TEN: don't wish you had somebody elses house, their husband, wife, partner, their belongings
WHY? respect your parents, listen to them, as they are there to help you grow up (we assume they are heathy role models, "upstanding, law abiding citizens", thus able to raise their children well)
don't murder or steal, it's against the law.
don't commit adultery, it ruins families and is a legal reason for divorce.
don't lie about other people,it only causes harm, and you look bad if others find out.
don't wish you had somebody elses house, their husband, wife, partner, their belongings (TVs, iPads,Nike shoes)...the more you want these things, the more you try to get them. If you have money, you buy them. (or,like what happened in the UK summer 2011 riots, if you don't have money, you steal them.)
overall, for how you act in society, we can say:
Treat people as you would like to be treated by others.
add: obey the laws pay your taxes act with morals
and that is the general moral code of our western societies.
If you do this, your life should be good right? Yes, if we ALL acted like this, it would. Unfortunately, not everybody acts morally, all the time, or ever.
CLASS No. 3 What are our moral duties? Let's start at the top.
The head of the government (president, prime minister, etc)
example a:when an American president is sworn in he takes an oath (he promisses to do this)
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
I do not wish to get into the constitution. If you are interested further reading can be found at:

We can ask the same questions of any government.
